The new stainless-steel kitchen is fitted with cabinetry and appliances and includes a floating island with a burner and drawers to conceal pots and pans. It’s set on wheels so Martin and Andrew can rotate it to free up floor space as needed while entertaining.

Warwas offset the rear of the ADU to accommodate the power lines running behind the house, and he designed a window in the office/guest room upstairs that meets the roof in the same way that the window off the dining area/kitchen meets the ground.

The flooring are custom green vinyl floor tiles ($800) from Etsy shop Marzipan Days, installed over the existing floor and sealed, while the wallpaper is the exact pattern that Kara admired in Quebec City coffee shop two years ago, bought on sale from Anthropologie for $700.

After: The soaring new living and dining space benefits from an abundance of natural light from every side, and they spent a lot of time trying to find the best lighting for the kitchen. The final choice: long, narrow copper pendants from Denmark suspended by ultra thin wires to not disrupt the visual flow of the room.

At the white oak vanity, Marlatt integrated a light with the mirror, and the entire installation moves along sliding barn door hardware. “That was something I really wanted to try,” says Marlatt. “It’s not super functional, just fun.”

Marlatt built the cabinets in place from Russian Birch plywood, and the counters are a thin application of Neolith stone. The backsplash is glass, making for easy clean-up, and a few of the cabinet fronts are painted Masonite, for fun pops of color. The ceramics on the shelves are by Burgevin.
