Inside his San Francisco living room, Max Heinritz kicks back on a Söderhamn sectional from IKEA. “In Tokyo, everything is space- efficient, nothing is wasted,” he says. “I’m sort of going for that, too.”

Max devised a movable plywood beam that holds a trio of pendant lamps to swing down as needed. A wood piece covered in chalkboard paint hides the electrical panel. “Slate was too expensive,” he says.

Bishop is an avid record collector—Rolling Stones albums are a sought-after favorite—and he keeps his vinyl in the shelving unit ”1.1,” a reproduction of Arbel’s first completed work. The kids can often be found playing video games at the desk in the great room.

Wylie’s bedroom features a rug from the Land of Nod and a sign from a local shop. “I put the shelves up myself on my seventh attempt,” Lena says. “If I move them, I guarantee you’ll see nineteen holes.”

Moving into a smaller home forced designer Eilat Dar to evaluate what was necessary. Adopting a minimalist aesthetic, the M Apartment makes use of every inch of space.

Located on the rural outskirts of Atlanta, Georgia, Serenbe is a picturesque community comprising four hamlets that focus on arts, agriculture, health, and education. Designed to be a center for quiet living for creatives and their families, the newest development, Mado, wants to focus on bringing the outdoors in, but in a modern setting. This is exactly the vibe that Iowa– and Serenbe–based designer Rebecca Cartwright achieved with The Naturally House, a tree house-inspired haven.
