In the sitting room, designer Dennis Budd of Gast Architects bumped out the foyer space slightly to define an entry colonnade, while new white oak paneling on the far wall creates a mural-like backdrop for the relocated dining area.

The patio outside the primary suite is made of bluestone pavers. The gabion walls were “a cost-effective way to build retaining walls, which we needed because of the slope, and for privacy,” says David.

The architects design for the backyard showcases an outdoor deck, bleacher seating, a lush grass area, and a deck with seating and a fire pit.

Sean and Geri Brunson designed and built the airy, glassy, midcentury-inspired home of their dreams on Florida's east coast.

“The clients live inside and out,” says architect Jeffrey Bokey-Grant. “It sounds cliched but the idea is that the doors are generally open all the time and you flow in and out without barriers.” The main balcony and rear doors are all weather so the doors can even remain open in the rain.

Surrounded by retractable glass doors, the dining area opens up to the landscape.

The original pool was refinished and grommets were installed for a custom safety cover. A new firepit by Lumacast and teak-and-rope lounge chairs from the Conran Shop create the perfect outdoor lounge area.

The deck and fire pit create a cozy space for everyday living and effortless entertaining.

Homeowner Sean Brunson led the design of the new modernist home, enlisting the help of architect Alex Stone to complete the drawings. For the design, the Brunsons were inspired by the modest post-and-beam homes of the 1950s and 60s, particularly the Sealy House by Edward Killingsworth.

A pocket window wall in front of the dining room lets in the warmth of the California sun during mealtime.

Inside the brightly colored home, walls of glass stretch along two sides of the lower level. The dining area features a Gather Dining Table by Jacob Plejdrup for dk3 and Wishbone dining chairs by Hans Wegner for Carl Hansen & Søn from Design Within Reach.

The concrete aggregate floor runs from the interior out to the patio. The patio chairs are by Chioco Design, and the Ratio cocktail table is by local furniture brand Seer Studio.

The home takes the form of two volumes that slide past each other. The front door leads directly to the center of the home, which connects to the both the entrance courtyard and the rear pool area, dissolving the boundaries between interior and exterior space.

Spiegel and the SAW team leaned on a comprehensive wood palette from Madera to strengthen the architectural vision–wrapping floors, walls and ceilings with wood to draw attention to the geometry of the voids. “It’s a material that has natural resonance between interior and exterior spaces,” shares Spiegel. “It holds sharp geometric forms, but produces visual and tactile softness.”

Flexible room dividers such as curtains and sliding doors abound in the residence, allowing modularity and expansiveness or enhanced intimacy, depending on the occasion.
