In the living area, furniture purchased on Craigslist sits on a reddish jute rug. Like all the interior doors, the TV cabinet is made of bamboo panels coated with hemp oil. On the floor is a midcentury brass lion sculpture, another artifact handed down from Jack’s grandfather, who was also an architect.

The home’s rooftop garden includes sunflowers, eggplant, cucumbers, and a variety of herbs. “The plants up there are all annuals, so it’s kind of experimental,” says Maddie. “In my job I’m always thinking about native plants and ecology, while up on the roof I can do whatever I want. It’s freer.”

A guest room on the second floor doubles as Jack’s home office and Maddie’s exercise room and features bamboo walls and a spray cork wall and ceiling. “There’s cork everywhere, from cork flooring to spray cork walls to acoustic cork panels to the exterior cladding,” says Jack. “It’s a celebration of cork.”

The design team restored the cork floors. The island lights are Sven Middleboe for Nordisk and are original to the house. The counters are Ceppo Di Gre Marble and the door to the restored pantry is painted Tarrytown Green by Benjamin Moore, and given a porthole window with reeded glass.
