The home rises and falls across 7 levels to accommodate the contours of the site. While the exterior dry stacked stone, cedar siding, and wood trim echo the natural landscape, the red windows lend contrast and definition.

From the living room, thick oak stair treads suspended on steel stringers descend to the game room, where a walnut bar, Craftsman pool table, and fireplace set the scene for entertaining and lounging.

Custom inverted windows structurally express the interplay of interior and exterior.

A few steps up from the living room, the open kitchen features a granite island, walnut cabinets, and stainless steel appliances. The surrounding clerestory windows usher in the light.

A redwood barrel vault entryway invites visitors to the house. An impressive feature that transitions from outdoor to indoor space, it posed a technical challenge.

The Haas residence occupies the largest plot in a cul-de-sac containing six homes. Tony and his team used tractors to reposition the enormous boulders that blocked the building site, nestling them into the vicinity.

From its locally quarried stone foundation to its zinc-coated copper roof, the cottage was inspired by its surroundings. “We talked a lot with our client about what the materiality would be,” says architect Karen Stonely, who, citing the organic style of Bar Harbor architect Robert Patterson, designed the structure with wood rather than drywall.

The residents, who live in Calgary, frequently entertain, and with 16 beds, bunks, and twin-bed-wide window seats, there is no shortage of places to sleep.

Black-stained and clear cedar siding offset the pitched roof, which alludes to the shape of evergreens.

Douglas fir walls and beams extend to the exterior of a weekend house near Golden, British Columbia. Designed by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson and Bohlin Grauman Miller Architects, it was designed for an active family that likes to hit the slopes. A chalet-like pitched roof emphasizes its cabin feel.
