The kitchen’s wood-framed glass doors are original to the house, and the wood used to build the island was taken from old ceiling beams. One section of the island is topped with counter-height granite.
Wide French doors extend the indoors out to a gracious patio and fire pit.
The interior of the 800 sf ADU melds the warmth of exposed wood framing with the crisp white finishes of the efficient kitchen.
The ADU shares the backyard of the main home, but gabion retaining walls (rocks in wire cages) and an elevated terrace gives it an intimate space of its own.
A wood trellis offers coverage and marks the entry to this 700-square-foot cottage ADU.
The double-height interior features an upper loft accessed by a custom wood-and-aluminum rolling ladder.
“That swoop was my least favorite thing about the house,” admits Fred. “I was looking forward to an angular, Craftsman-type thing. But I said, I’m going to trust Kristin.”
