Homes with Underfloor Radiant Heating

No one likes to feel a cold floor on a winter morning; a floor with hydronic radiant heating is an efficient and eco-friendly way to keep your home (and your feet) warm. During construction, a system of pipes are embedded in house's floors. Once activated, a mixture of water and anti-freeze chemicals convey heat to the floors (and by extension, the room above it).

With limited space, Heierle maximized the living area with a multi-functional kitchen island. The side facing the living room acts like a bar; a sink and countertop extend the kitchen area; and the counter across from the entryway often holds key or packages when the client arrives home. "It's a miniature of the entire apartment," Heierle says of the centerpiece, "one object having multiple uses." The island, along with all the oak furniture and custom casework in the apartment, was all built and designed by a friend of the owner who lives in the same rural Romanian village where he grew up.

Perhaps the greatest challenge of the project was trying to pack so many energy efficient features in under a budget. Not only does the bathroom feature NuHeat radiant floor mats but all water is heated with a GE Hybrid Heat Pump Water Heater, saving on heating expenses by around 67%.
