A Nova Scotia couple learn that although triangular homes may look simple, they can be devilishly complex.

“We decided it was a fun moment to have no white in the space and use the fireplace as a kind of accent,” says Paula.

The home explores new, innovative ways of utilizing hemp. The kitchen and dining area are located in a double-height space.

The historic home sits tucked away on a lush, shaded lot, just 45 minutes from Manhattan.

Floor-to-ceiling glazing encompasses the double-height living room on the upper level.

The roof profile of the addition is a direct reference to the hipped roof of the main house.

"One visit over the winter, and we drove up to find four feet of snow covering the driveway and stairs down to the cabin,

The communal lodge features six nearly identical bedrooms alongside an interior made of exposed concrete, flooring, steel, and brass.

Designed by Edward Fickett and restored by Philip Overbaugh, this 1957 residence freely flows from inside to out.

The deck goes around the back of the home, to create an elevated walkway from room to room.

The hallway leading into the second bedroom has additional storage cabinets.

The extension celebrates traditional artisanal building techniques and local materials. “It’s all about working with what is available locally and bringing it together to create a finely crafted space,” explains architect Je Ahn. “You can feel a human touch throughout that gives the project a sense of warmth and tranquillity.”

Deep window boxes double as cosy reading nooks and bench seats that immerse the residents in the landscape.
