Architect Fareez Giga deploys a suite of custom built-ins to upgrade a 715-square-foot flat for a bibliophile and a passionate cook.

“As seasons change we experience the main house and cabin differently,” says Jeremy. “A simple walk to the fire pit or hot tub or wine cave seems to offer up new perspectives.”

Verena Phipps rents the property while its owners are away.

In the kitchen, a tube-type exhaust hood complements the fireplace around the corner. The artwork is by Horace McCullough, the owners' son.

Rodney from RF Design, which specializes in IKEA kitchens, helped the couple create elevations that allowed them to spec out appliances, countertops, and fixtures. They tired a few different options before landing on the final design, which privileges low, wide, deep drawers.

A new deck was built to be wider for more accessibility, and to also make space for a dining area and hot tub.

This prefab also has a wraparound deck with a shaded dining area.

Designers Murray Barker and Esther Stewart leaned into a midcentury aesthetic with the renovation of this 700 square-foot walk-up apartment.

A custom banquette anchors a vintage table with a Nelson Saucer Bubble Pendant hanging above and vintage Scandinavian sconces rewired for accent lighting on the wall. The banquette’s placement against the wall allows for easy circulation through the room to the rear of the house.

Influenced by textures and materials of Western Australia, the red brick tiles are porous and commonly used there for indoor and outdoor spaces.

Chevron-patterned brick tiles define the hallway and wet rooms.

Florençon closed one of the doorways into the bedroom and turned the space into a closet and built-in bookcase.
