The interior walls, shelves and other fixtures were built using 19mm CLT and have been left with their natural spruce finish that will turn golden with exposure to the daylight.

Located in Karuizawa, a popular summer resort town in Japan’s Nagano Prefecture, Four Leaves is a weekend getaway designed to accommodate the homeowner and their guests in a lush, sylvan setting. Designed by Kentaro Ishida Architects Studio (KIAS), the highlight of the stunning, 2,400-square-foot house is its sloping, angular roof sections that are delicately assembled to resemble fallen leaves.

Viewed from above, the home wraps around itself and is folded around a small central courtyard. The roof sections overlap in an organic way, giving the home its name: Four Leaves.

The roofs’ concave and convex forms are elegantly layered and integrated into the home's forested setting.

The shelter can accommodate eight people.

The bivouac is designed for minimal environmental impact. It's set on non-permanent foundations and anchored to the rock in a non-invasive way, and it can be removed without leaving a trace.

High-quality materials guarantee the shelter's durability, and every piece is recyclable and ecologically certified.

Every component is sized for easy transport and handling, and all the components were dry mounted on-site without the use of concrete.

The high-altitude, remote site called for simple and efficient construction choices and careful logistical planning.

The home is also equipped with an infrared heater and a wireless bluetooth speaker.

The exterior is clad in fiber-cement panels and topped with a bitumen roof.

At the heart of the hut is a wood-burning stove. The kitchenette features a Hansgrohe tap, a Franke sink, laminated chipboard cabinets, along with high-pressure laminate counters and backsplashes.

The queen-size bed with natural fiber bedding is perfectly slotted into a corner of the house. The bathroom is fitted with a Gustavsberg basin and tap, as well as a Roca toilet.
