San Francisco–based designer Tina Frey creates modern resin products for the home, using a thoroughly executed design, hand sculpting, and hand casting process. Her bold and playful wall hooks make a graphic addition to an interior. Made from shatterproof resin, each set of three wall hooks includes a small, medium, and large knob.

A bridge connects the second-floor office and guest bedroom with the backyard-facing master bedroom. To prevent excessive solar heat gain in this especial space, Butler Armsden used high performance Unilux low-e windows. Two Eurofase pendant lights from Chromos illuminate the hallway at night.

The central stairway spans the entire house from the first floor to the roof, which is crowned by a glass ceiling that allows in extra light. Areas such as the master bedroom, which is open to the living room below, fan off of the staircase, a unifying component.

Working with a limited footprint, a daunting slope, and killer views, architect Bruce Bolander went vertical with a secluded canyon house in Malibu. The hallway leading to the master bedroom is lined with an assortment of framed photos of family and friends and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the verdant James River Valley.

One of the most challenging aspects of the build was incorporating the residents' request for a diverse material palette. The flooring is ash and the cabinetry is Mahogany. Cash Barnes custom fabricated the steel railing as well as the bridge and insect screens.

A soaped ash unit in the center of the apartment contains all of the storage, including the kitchen cabinets and a mirrored closet.

Zames reconfigured the apartment to improve circulation and open some of the confined rooms. What was formerly a hallway is now integrated with the kitchen. A bank of floor-to-ceiling cabinets offers storage and an island covered in carrara marble offers space for working or dining. "We embraced dark colors in the kitchen to keep a contrast with the bright white of the surrounding living areas," Zames says of the constrasting finishes. The barstools are from CB2.

Mia Nielsen, the Drake's in-house art curator, populated the spaces with paintings, sculptures, and installations from contemporary practitioners. The owl is by Canadian artist Jennifer Murphy. The design team used a mix of materials and textures throughout the space to instill a feeling of "surprise and delight," as Tong describes. For example, the main corridor features painted brick, patterned tile from Sabine Hill, steel racks, and weathered wood floors.

In addition to reconstructing an open living room, Loft Szczecin had to subdivide four smaller spaces to create privacy in the expansive warehouse.
