In the entryway, stained white-oak cabinetry provides a tidy place for shoes and bags. An unexpected but delightful moment of Brooks Thomas’ Martha Armitage wallpaper adorns the ceiling. The front door is a custom design.

A storage niche just inside the garage entry has three minty-green Shelfology Doohicky hooks and a shoe shelf. Heated terrazzo floors in the kitchen were the idea of one of the homeowner’s daughters, Sarah Smith, who was the lead architect on the project.

“Everything needed to be approachable and simple,” says Hilary. “The house reflects who we are.”

Almost every room in the extension has direct access to the outside so the relationship with the grounds is immediate. In addition, carefully considered windows frame views of the surrounding landscape—especially the large window facing the valley in the first-floor living space. “It’s incredibly joyful to see how the views, smells, and emotion of being in the extension changes throughout the different seasons,” says architect Je Ahn. “It’s very tranquil and a retreat in the true sense of the word.”

The primary bedroom and bath are connected via a soaring wood-trimmed archway.
