To break up the long living room, Pettit created a walnut bookcase at the entrance.

The firm specified a museum reveal around the windows, doors, and cabinetry, as well as over the flush baseboard. This keeps the scheme minimal and creates a “very simple tracery where you have a punctuation in the architecture, and then you reveal back to the soft white drywall walls,” says Klymson.

A narrow stairwell leading from the kitchen to the primary suite above is partially enclosed by a brick screen, which lets in light and fresh air. Solar panels line the roof of the bedroom. “We didn’t want to plant just any home in Mexico,” Marc says. “It had to be a Mexican house that’s going to survive here.”

The half-wall that divides the living room and dining room is walnut, and was a clever way to separate the living and dining zones, and wrap the structural posts, which were painted a dark grey. There’s a television lift inside the cabinet that allows the TV to be stowed when not in use. The couch is from Design Within Reach, and the flooring throughout is white oak.

The fireplace is covered in Norman brick from Mutual Materials, in an era-appropriate stacked pattern.

A midcentury-style walnut screen separates the entry from the living room, yet allows connection with its permeability.

The vintage credenza once belonged to the architect’s grandmother, and the framed drawing on the right is by Graham’s mother, artist MJ Levy-Dickson.

The entrance opens to the living area, in which an I-beam stands where the kitchen enclosure was. “It was really tight, so we wanted to push back the wall that was in front of the door,” Julien says. The couple traded the old carpet for terrazzo flooring. Julien found the test bomb at an antiques mall.

Pascali Semerdjian designed this copper tray that extends from a wooden wall feature.

The entry leads directly to the open-plan kitchen, dining area, and living room, where full-height sliding doors extend the living spaces to the outdoors.
