Located on the ground level, the kitchen and main living space are open to the elements. Large sliding doors pocket into the wall cavity, providing a seamless connection to the coast. Skylights allow natural light to filter into the space while providing glimpses to the green roof above. A horizontal window provides a snapshot to the rugged, mountainous terrain. The linear kitchen leads along a circulation spine, which connects to the more private areas.

In the bedroom hallway, a window is placed specifically in front of each door. “It’s like you have your own personal relationship with the window as you come through,” says Andrew Ashey, co-principal at AAmp Studio.

Thick insulation, double glazing, and deep eaves minimize heat gain, while a polished concrete floor is key to the thermal heating and cooling.

A concrete-block-lined hallway connects the pavilions.

Reilly reconfigured the layout turning the two-bedroom with one bath into a three-bedroom with two baths. The entire interior is clad in cedar planks. “I was very committed to cladding throughout despite the cost,” the architectural designer says. “I’d rather have none than just do one wall.”

The Eames Lounge Chair in the living area is appealingly positioned by the wall of floor-to-ceiling glass.

A chain curtain from Cascade Coil separates the kitchen without interrupting sightlines or sunlight. “When you light the outside brighter than the inside at night, it becomes more opaque,” says Mark. Bulthaup cabinetry joins appliances by Gaggenau and Miele.

A neat, timber-framed niche at the entrance allows occupants to take their shoes off and keep them in the mud room across the hallway before proceeding to the house’s main spaces.

The trajectory along the length of the house is defined by a pattern play of asymmetrical window frames. Clerestory windows above the bedrooms bring more light into the corridor.

The interior is lined almost entirely in birch plywood panels.
