Once through the street-level entrance, the property's modern garage door comes into view. Stairs lead up to the kitchen.

In front, a patterned brick pathway leads through a cactus garden to the main entrance, which is marked by a low, horizontal facade with wooden accents and splashes of color. The orange-red overhang is inspired by a torii (a traditional gateway to a Japanese Shinto shrine).

Cristián created slots in the rear facade so that each home’s primary bedroom could have three exposures. The voids also allowed him to install skylights that illuminate the ground floor. The detailing of the ribbed exterior was adapted from a large institutional building designed by his father—“really almost a cut and paste,” says Cristián. The overhang at the rear of the building offers partial cover for the private walled patio that each family enjoys.

The alley entrance is shaded by a cantilevered volume on the second floor. Turf-block pavers reduce runoff.

A concrete block wall (above) separates the entry from the living area, where an Arne Norell Kontiki easy chair joins an Eames lounge chair.

The gap between the back wall of the pavilion and the roof is perfectly sized to capture winter sun and summer shade.

An attentive sensitivity to site played into nearly every aspect of both the exterior andinterior spaces of the home. Architect Peter Rose collaborated with landscape architect Michael Van Valkenburgh, who worked to craft and maintain the wild, organic feel of the environs. Will Parry, a local builder, custom-fabricated all of the sustainably harvested Spanish cedar-and-glass windows and skylights throughout. Here, a vertical-swinging window at the end of the entry hallway opens directly to a lush expanse of vegetation.

The expansion is flanked on both sides by lush gardens. Here, the line between indoors and outdoors is blurred to the extreme... to the homeowners' delight.

Landscaping was another major investment in the project’s budget, turning the backyard into something more closely resembling a “golf course with trees.” Isaac spent $48K on the illuminated stone pathway that leads up to the space.

The largest of the three patios originally sheltered animals, but it’s now a shaded gathering space. Among Patricia’s prized possessions are spun-fiberglass chairs that were once an iconic feature in local hotels.

The metal railing that runs around the whole plot - including the metal gate at the entrance, a homage to the couple's dog, Lusia - is made with steel powder coated in the signature raspberry red color of the house.
