Six Fold is a minimal bench created by Australia-based designer Elliot Bastianon. Six Fold is a bench seat that uses six individual sheets of EchoPanel® to function as an underframe, turning a non-structural material into a supportive element. It is an extension of the ideas presented in a previous work that explored the method of ‘V’ bent panels – and echoes a ‘strength in numbers’ approach to design solutions. A timber frame on the underside removes any chance of deflection and ensures the top remains flat when used. The solid oak top has been blackened and polished, muting some aspects of the timber’s characteristics while simultaneously highlighting others.
Half Cab is a minimal sideboard created by Toronto-based design firm MSDS. Half Cab derives its name from the fact that the doors cover half of the area of the cabinet face, providing equal parts concealment and display. The doors are made of painted aluminum and are designed to drape over and slide easily along the scaffolding-like frame.
"99 percent of the miniatures featured in the book were made painstakingly with hand tools: Xacto knives, sandpaper, felt, a needle and thread, strips of basswood, and mahogany—things you can find at a great art supply store," Chun says. "I only recently got a Dremel rotary tool to help with sanding the curves of a Saarinen dining table. But overall, the simple, clean lines—often pure geometry—found in mid-century and Danish modern sensibilities helps with creating pieces at this scale."
