A third module, perpendicular to the main living areas, contains the master bedroom, which is furnished with a bed from Design Within Reach, a rug from Crate and Barrel, and a watercolor by Marfa artist Nick Terry. The saddle leather chair is by local furniture maker Garza Marfa.

Hale found these Stendig chairs from Finland at a junk store in Seattle. He paid $15 per chair.

In the living room, an Akari lamp by Isamu Noguchi sits atop a coffee table Hale made and next to a collage of Maisie and Pippa’s paintings. Like most of the furniture in the house, the couch, coffee table, and side table were made by Hale or his close colleagues, often in his favorite material: plywood.

By replacing a wall with a custom wood-and-glass partition, architect Matt Krajewski transformed a previously dark one-bedroom railroad apartment in Manhattan into a light-filled home. Compact furnishings, like a Mandal bed frame from IKEA with integrated storage, maximize every inch of the 390-square-foot unit, housed in a former tenement building.

The Murphy bed niche is lined in deep blue fabric by Knoll.

Aumas reads on a vintage Swan sofa by Arne Jacobsen. The teal side table is from a Berlin flea market; the walnut stool by Charles and Ray Eames is from an antique store in Brussels; Aumas himself made the art on the wall.

While Aumas designed the gilded table, Warren Platner gets credit for the vintage lounge chair for Knoll.
