A custom-made black walnut dining table is surrounded by chairs from Matthew Hilton Designs. A Lindsey Adelman chandelier hangs overhead. The team chose to paint the dining room in Railings by Farrow and Ball to create a mood apart from the airier kitchen and living area.

A new picture window in the dining area offers an ocean view. Cándida designed the dining chairs, which were made by Wildbird Woodworks; the pendant is from Huegah Home.

The living room's wall of windows makes it easy to look out onto the desert. Julie wanted to keep the interior design minimal in order to focus on the setting.

Julie bought the sofa at in auction in Stockholm, and loves how it blends into the midcentury modern look and feel of the home.

A table by Seattle studio Chadhaus complements the home's existing oak floors and cedar walls.

The dining room includes a 1980s Philippe Starck armchair. The trays, also by Haddock Studio, are part of a group of pieces made from old redwood boards found in the building’s basement.

Artworks made by Craig and Thomas’s friends complement a coffee table by Faye Toogood and a foam chair by Wentrcek Zebulon. The couple made the papier-mâché side table last year, “at the height of pandemic boredom,” says Craig.

All of the furnishings are domestically made and were sourced from Erica’s design store, Solsken, in the Palermo district of Buenos Aires. “The leather upholstered chairs and benches won recognition for good design for furniture produced in Argentina, so I’m proud to have them on display here,” she says.

Original pine wall boards are painted white to reflect light in the den. A George Nelson pendant hangs above a clean-lined sectional sofa atop carpet tiles by FLOR. The pillows are made from MissPrint Garden City fabric, and the quilt is from Haptic Lab.

Sutherland added a large arrangement of windows facing the lake in the living room. The top windows are tilt-and-turn, and the bottom windows are fixed. The owners bought the sofas at ABC Carpet & Home in Manhattan, and the coffee table at Camden Market in London. The pillows are made from Dandelion Two fabric by Angie Lewin for St. Jude.

Doors flank the main seating area of the living space. The owners purchased the Heywood Wakefield chairs from Strictly Hey-Wake in Hagerstown, Maryland near the wife’s childhood home. “I’d always wanted Heywood Wakefield furniture, and it fits in really well here,” she says.

The home's furnishings and decor reflect the couple's personal style, with a blend of midcentury modern and Scandinavian-inspired pieces.

With the intervening wall removed, there’s now a sightline through the main floor to the backyard.

The quartzite island in the kitchen is a grounding presence beneath the void and a focal point between the dining room and living room. The living room features a Gentry sofa by Patricia Urquiola for Moroso.

In this custom-built London guesthouse kitchen designed by Studiomama, lustrous vertically clad cabinetry achieves additional depth with the addition of the chairs, which were picked up for $15 each at a local market and powder coated in bright orange.
