The entrance to the home—the genkan—is where guests remove their shoes in a Japanese house. Here, it conveniently features built-in storage cabinets.

Dark green vinyl flooring by Colour Flooring covers a bathroom floor.

Interlocking rubber tiles from HiddenLock provide a watertight seal for the floor. Primarily used in garages, the tough, spill-friendly tiles cost about $3.15 per square foot.

In the kitchen, a mini vertical garden provides fresh aromatic herbs thanks to a mix of direct sun and specialized artificial lighting. A vibrant rubber floor leads the eye forward.

In the kitchen, the original unpainted brick can be glimpsed. The floors are polyurethane.

A ramp leads to the entrance door.

Having served as her birthplace and childhood home where her parents and grandparents lived, the 1953 apartment that a client asked Brazilian studio Cupertino Arquitetura to renovate was steeped in family history.

Says homeowner Dentand, "You come here and you sleep well. I think that this is the most relaxing place that I have ever been."

Transom glass above each door allows for light and views while reducing sound transmission.

To create a clean and minimalist aesthetic, only treated pine plywood and concrete was used in the interiors.

Anchoring the Housemuseum’s music room is the mural YOU’VEALWAYSWANTEDTOBEBLACK (white friend), a 2006 piece by artist Brook Andrew. The red staircase leads to the bedrooms and additional gallery space on the second floor.

In the bathroom, the home’s epoxy floor transitions from whitish gray to submarine yellow. The sink and tub are by Galassia, and the faucets are by Vola. A ladder, which serves as a towel rack, was sourced from the Danish Emergency Management Agency. The black-and-white industrial laundry bin is by Vipp.

A custom light fixture by the Sterling Steel Company hangs over the quartz countertop by Caesarstone. The clear Douglas fir doors on the cabinets were whitewashed to let the grain shine through.

Architect Makoto Tanijiri’s firm custom-designed most of the furniture in the building, including the steel-and-paulownia dining table.

A custom entry door by Creekside Millwork is positioned diagonally from the home’s rectilinear form.

In the living area, Brothers sits on an Artek stool while perusing a selection from his library.
