Pioneertown, California, was founded in 1946 by Hollywood investors—including Roy Rogers and Gene Autry—who wanted to create an Old West movie set that visitors could interact with.

Its owners say their trailer renovation could only be an Airstream, not only because of its timeless midcentury-modern aesthetics but its durability.

Before: The living room enjoyed expansive windows and a double-height space, but needed more direct connections to the outdoor living area.

A view of the widened opening, which went from 30 inches to eight feet, between the kitchen and dining room. “The goal was to stand in the living room and look all the way through the dining room and kitchen, through the window to the backyard,” says Beaulieu. “We really wanted to have this nice visual connection throughout the house.” Beaulieu found a woodworker to recreate the original casework where it was needed to patch with the old. The dining room light is the Konos Pendant from Tech Lighting.

The bathroom towards the front of the building had a greater width than the staircase: rather than having a notch, Bader curved the wall. “It gave it flow instead of an abrupt change of direction.” That theme is echoed on the main level, with a curved ceiling in the kitchen to disguise a pesky bulkhead.

The rudimentary form of the house mimics the pitched-roofed building surrounding the plot.

One of Amber’s favorite features in in the house is the splash of color in the kitchen backsplash, via a tile called 'Unfading' green slate from Vermont Structural Slate Company.

In the reading nook, Karimoku Case Study chairs and coffee table are joined by a Normann Copenhagen couch.

The overall home is constructed with larch timber, a British wood, and features a central ridge beam that gives it a butterfly-shaped roof. Shou sugi ban was done on the wood to give it a charred finish.

The clients opted to preserve an original sink in the primary bedroom. “Because they were open to it, we kept it there–it’s cute and quirky,” says Jacoby. The wood floor extends into the bath.

After living with the original exterior for a while, Bryan had the shell buffed to its natural silver finish. “I think it's the most gorgeous thing in the world,” says Bryan of the Airstream’s iconic shape.
