Quynh-Vy and her sisters Tuvy Pham and Yenvy Pham share a laugh while folding shrimp dumplings. “I wanted a kitchen big enough for everyone to gather in,” says Quynh-Vy, “but even though it’s big, it feels warm and intimate. It draws everyone in.”

The interior living space is warmed by wood panels above and a hanging fire place. The large glass hangar provides direct views and connection to the exterior elements.

Futuristic floating stairs lead to the loft’s mezzanine. Throughout the lower level, natural stone was chosen for the flooring, laid at an irregular angle to add visual interest.

Set among fields along the south facing coast of Long Island and within a short walk to the ocean, this Hamptons residence is a quiet refuge for a growing family. Architect Bohlin Cywinski Jackson says that “a suspended bridge spans through the double-height space, connecting second story volumes at varying levels and inclining upward and terminating at either end in an open staircase.”

An intricately detailed staircase leads to the central wing’s second level. Its walnut treads and top rail harmonize with the welded steel rod railings. The geometric pattern on the staircase’s risers comes from encaustic tiles that were handmade in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
