Architect Tito Ficarelli designed the Toca House for himself and his wife, artist Luiza Gottschalk, their daughters, a family friend, and their dogs.

Though the dining room is across the hallway from the kitchen, the spaces maintain a connection via glass walls and an outdoor portion of the hallway, which can double as a covered patio.

Full-height, black sliding glass doors connect the interior spaces to the rear courtyard and enable indoor/outdoor living.

The traditional wood-fired oven acts as both a stove and a way to warm the home. “It’s really important because it has this presence of the history of the rural world. But we designed it and it’s made with rammed earth, which is a new thing [compared to] other traditional ovens,” says Tavares.

The interior features warm woods, bronze and tan tones, and stone found on the site.
