Hexagonal penny tile ascends from floor to ceiling in the skylit primary bathroom.

Several handcrafted pieces by local artist Jim Olarte adorn the home, including this architectural macrame installation on the entry wall, made using old fisherman’s rope found on the beach. “It’s cool seeing him take what was once waste, found by the ocean, and reuse it for something one-of-a-kind and so beautiful,” says Leah.

Bifold sliding doors seamlessly open the dining space to an outdoor deck, which also cantilevers over the backyard. The space is covered by a balcony off of the master suite.

For the heart of the space, Hale designed a double vanity—fabricated with wood from the original house—around an existing column. The pendant is by Lindsey Adelman.

At the top of Eric’s “must” list was a windowed garage door connecting the living area and the new balcony. “I wanted this garage door so bad,” he says. “The whole design was really based around it as a cool way to create an indoor/outdoor feel.”

Risa Boyer Architecture guided the whole house remodel of this 1955 Portland home. Lillyvilla Gardens executed a new landscape plan for the property, including this updated entry sequence, while Boyer added more glass to suit the midcentury façade.

Two detached structures await in the landscaped backyard, as well as various seating areas which frame striking views of the surrounding bay.
