The primary bedroom kept the original, two-sided copper fireplace.

Influenced by late Swedish architect Bengt Warne’s naturhus concept (in short, a house built in an agricultural greenhouse), Roja Brimalm and Johan Holmstedt worked with architect Fredrik Olson at Tailor Made Architects to design their home southwest of Stockholm.

Crawford taught himself how to reface the brick fireplace façade, using a creamy-colored, thin set brick. “It was his first time using a tile saw or laying brick, but his meticulous precision paid off,” says Devlin.

The structure appears to float above the terrain with a resilient foundation that supports almost any site. The structure itself is purposefully uninsulated to connect the occupants closer with the raw, natural elements and ever-changing weather conditions outside.

The roof overhangs protect the entrance—and a small space for a mini kitchen to be built.

In this rendering, the space is set up for sleep as the "Rest-Space" version. Wall-mounted rungs become clothing racks, and nightstands stand adjacent to the bed.

Custom furniture pieces attach to the wood structure on rungs, allowing owners to modify the space as needed over time. Here, the interior is set up as "Focus-Space," a private office with a wall-mounted work surface.

The wood cladding extends outside and wraps around a corner of the facade. Alemán Design Build oversaw the landscaping.

“The house went up so fast compared to a lot of buildings we do, because it’s such a simple design,” explains designer Tim Whitehill.

The nearly floor-to-ceiling windows also wrap around a corner of the room.

The sunlit family room features sliding glass doors that provide direct access to the surrounding patio and backyard.

Inside, the home offers many original features—from a cinder block fireplace to Douglas fir ceilings and redwood-clad walls. The home's long-time owners modernized and expanded the structure while respecting Jones's and Smith's original design intentions.

Sited on one of the four original parcels developed in Crestwood Hills, this midcentury home was designed by architect A. Quincy Jones in partnership with architect Whitney R. Smith. The structure was among the first built in a cooperative community called the Mutual Housing Association, and it is now on the market for the first time since 1994.

The principal bedroom also provides direct access to a private terrace.

The chairs at the kitchen table were rescued from an old church.

Storage was built in all down the hallway, making efficient use of a linear space.
