Light spills in from the double doors Lucky installed, which lead to the front yard and recall the Southern Californian tradition of indoor/outdoor living. “To us, our furniture is the art inside the house,” says Lucky. “The Vespa, for example, is a piece of artwork; the design is classic.”

Brill’s Prius sits under the solar panels, which supplies the energy for the house's lighting, air-conditioning and hot water.

When Brill purchased his residence, a onetime warehouse for mid-century lighting fixtures, it was subdivided. He and architect Tony Unruh gutted the 1,800-square-foot building completely and created an open floor plan for Brill's living areas and practice space.

An existing lightwell was filled-in to create space for a concealed laundry area at the rear of the main bathroom. Soft natural light pours in from the skylight over the tub.

BSC designed suspended powder-coated and walnut open shelves to demarcate the kitchen from the rest of the living space. The detailing on the cast-iron columns inspired the perforated pattern of the semi-transparent screens.

The first floor holds the living room, which includes a Morsø 3440 wood-burning stove and a pair of Mags sofas by HAY.

While checking in, you’re welcomed into an open-air space that’s surrounded by locally-sourced TK wood. You’ll also see a surfboard fin installation by TK and custom Surfjack crates that were created by Retrospect Designs.

The bathrooms are filled with North Shore toiletries and custom ceramic floor tiles. Andrew Mau, who designed the shaka wallpaper in the restaurant, also created the Moana Vanity Mirrors.

Cohen and his wife, Sally, sit in the dining room, which along with the connected living room, is a focal point of the house, lighted in part by high, remote-controlled clerestory windows.

Built on a gentle slope on the Westport River, less than a mile from the coast in southeastern Massachusetts is an unabashedly modern glass house designed for a well known Cambridge general contractor and his wife. Mature oaks and cedars define the property edges and frame dramatic sunset and island views.
