High on the east bank of New York's Hudson River, a special midcentury home receives a stunning renovation inspired by the strength of its initial design.

The renovated rear portion of the home is connected to the front bedroom and new bathroom via a split staircase leading up to the main bedroom and a studio, and down to the living space. A tiled and plant-filled courtyard divides the dwelling’s public and private spaces, with one side bordering the main living area and the other adding a window to the bathroom and the stairs.

The spacious main bathroom (a former bedroom), joins marble, brass, and green elements. It is innovative for its use of "micro-spaces" that are subdivided and contained within the scalloping of the rear wall. They are meant to make each element feel special and separate, dividing a large room into smaller spaces that "hug you as you use them."

The "transparent veranda" allows natural light to penetrate the building’s interior and connects the living areas to the exterior courtyards.

By framing the outdoor landscape—including two courtyards, front and rear yards, and two small roof gardens—as a series of “rooms,” the architects created an indoor/outdoor living experience where the indoors are filled with natural light all day.

Built for a scholar, Casa Biblioteca is a sanctuary for reading, stargazing, and enjoying a cigar or two. Floor-to-ceiling glass allows light to freely flood the interior and illuminate its jewel-like structure.

The Glebe House by Chenchow Little architects is defined by its arched details and wedge-like form.

Just off the living area is the pool—an enchanting sight while dining at the customizable table.

“The steel planter that hovers above the entry courtyard gate has brought a lot of joy to the experience of living in the house,” says designer Jamie Chioco.

The entrance is through an enclosed courtyard, which features ipe (Brazilian walnut) timber fencing with an exposed painted steel structure topped with planters. The living room is visible through a glazed corner.

New storage, multifunctional pegs, and pegboards help a New York City lawyer make the most of his 710-square-foot apartment. In the foyer, StudioKCA turned a closet into a valet area.

In the Bogarts’ living room, a brick fireplace inspired by Josef Albers commands attention and changes with the daylight. The artist made the bowl filled with yellow flowers in college.

The porch off the master bedroom overlooks a backyard with bunny sculptures by Dallas artist Brad Oldham.

The serene principal bathroom features floor-to-ceiling windows and a deep soaking tub where the artist unwinds every evening.
