To accommodate a young family leaving New York City, design firm Stewart-Schafer revamped the kitchen and living areas of an outdated upstate home in just three months.

The parents’ bedroom is intentionally small, with a custom storage unit framing a giant window. “It makes the views feel that much bigger,” says Handa.

The green roof, wood cladding, and low profile help to integrate the home with its lush, natural surroundings.

Honey-hued cabinetry offer plentiful storage in the kitchen—a space further brightened by large windows stretching toward the high ceilings in the corner.

A reading nook near the kitchen offers a quiet space to take in verdant garden views. Architect Stephen Andrews constructed the accent wall using salvaged shiplap from the 1930s, while Britt crafted a custom cushion that contains minimal fire retardants, which are carcinogenic.

After the home was assembled, a local contractor built the outdoor concrete patio and barbecue on site.

After combing through kitchen cabinets and finding nothing appealing that would fit their budget, Danielle and Ely decided to build everything themselves with lumber from the hardware store—sanding, staining, and sealing each piece. The countertops are plywood, as is the range hood surround.

The living room features a built-in sofa with drawers for additional storage, custom-made by Trio Upholstery. The bleached red oak storage cabinets were made by L&Z Specialties, Inc. to match the kitchen cabinets. The wall sconce is from Serge Mouille.

Located in La Unión, a city and commune in Chile’s Los Ríos region, Refugio 3x3 is set in a forest on the side of a new lot of residential houses that were built in response to the recent expansion of city limits.

At the back of the living room is a dining area adjacent to the kitchen. The bedroom and bathroom area are accessible from a small hallway to the left.
