The primary facade uses wood slats to create a privacy screen between the street and the private world of the house. Frosted glass was also used strategically in this bathroom to allow light in but create privacy as well.

Wood screens are crafted from modified soft wood from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified forests.

Natural light and striking views are welcomed through Kolbe VistaLuxe WD LINE windows which the design team selected for their construction quality, thin wood profiles, and extruded aluminum exteriors.

Now, the sizeable kitchen is an exceptional blend of old and new. The original floors, coffered ceiling, and windows are joined with IKEA cabinets with Semihandmade fronts, and Vermont-sourced Danby marble counters.

The dining room combines the existing wood features with a custom chandelier found on Etsy.

The Shinomotos have filled their Southern California home with furniture by Taku and pieces by some of the artists and craftspeople whose work they also showcase at their Tortoise shops and showroom. The couple worked with architectural designer Ken Tanaka to remodel the house, once a cramped, two-bedroom rental. A sofa and tables by Taku join Jasper Morrison’s Three Sofa De Luxe sofa for Cappellini. The sliders are by Western Window Systems.

The main bathroom features a soaking tub, Hansgrohe faucets, and bathroom tiles from Heath Ceramics and American Universal Penny.

Minerit paneling finished with wax also tops the counter of the kitchen island.

A cedar deck, built-in bench, and Fermob Costa table and chairs under a new porch roof serve as a year-round dining area.

“The tent-like shape resembles a mountain. When the snow falls, the triangle becomes embedded in the landscape,” Tham says.
