The new prefab unit is located just a few meters from the main home—a thatched-roof cottage that dates back to the 1950s. “The dark color of the cladding blends into the dark hedges in the garden, so the unit doesn’t attract too much attention,” says Vriesema.

Custom white oak cabinetry defines the open plan kitchen, which also features a stone-topped island and breakfast nook, where Ricks and his family spend much of their time.

Carlos Naude and Whitney Brown enjoy the outdoor dining area with their son, Rico, and dog, Mona. Kinto table settings complete the tableau.

“We wanted to create a really cozy nook,” says Jones of the new bed area of the apartment. A mirror at the end of the bed visually expands the interior space.

"In some ways the strongest attributes of the house are probably the outside spaces,” says Court. The original cedar deck was replaced with Kebony decking that wraps around a century-old cherry tree. A pair of Andy rockers from Mamagreen face an ottoman by Kenneth Cobonpue. The accordion doors are a NanaWall SL-60 system that allows the main room of the guesthouse to open completely to the deck.

The dark facade that covers Das Schwarze Haus has been preserved through carbonization, instead of through chemical treatment. Buero Wagner's design sits quietly in the countryside, a slender volume rising out of the trees.

In reference to the dense aggregation of New England’s farm complexes, the architects placed the studio and the house barns close together, creating an outdoor space between the two structures that one approaches before arriving at the entrance to the house.
