Alicia and David decided to replace the outdated heating elements with underfloor heating for added comfort.

Sugarhouse reworked the living room storage and reoriented the room to better occupy the available space. An Ellison Studio sofa, recovered in Dedar Patchwork Fabric, fits the whole family for movie nights. The coffee table is from Etsy and the rug is Nordic Knots. The overhead light is a vintage Poul Henningsen via 1st Dibs.

Sugarhouse Design & Architecture lightened up the entry hall, thanks to interior fluted glass panels, white oak floors with a contrasting walnut inlay, and custom oak closets that reach to the ceiling (after removing the fussy tray feature there). The bench is custom-designed by Sugarhouse and fabricated by Elwood Design Co in Orange, CA, and the ceiling light is by Modern Forms.

Many of the studio’s details match the main home like the pine floors, the recycled slate tiles, and the exposed galvanized wiring conduits.

Original details can be found throughout, including the red brick fireplace in the living room.

Their two-bedroom unit is upstairs, and an art and music studio occupies part of the lower level. In warmer months, the family spends most of their time outside, often around a firepit Sean built from stones he found in the backyard.

When the residents of Sinfonía Verde bought their property in 2002, they had expected to spend most of their time on the beach. But the land changed in the twenty years since the initial purchase, and—drawn to the sounds of the regenerating rainforest—they found themselves spending more and more time inland. They asked Ben Saxe to design a house immersed in the canopy because of the studio’s “beautiful designs that work with the environment rather than against it,” the clients say.

Nestled in a historic village in the Kent countryside, the two-bedroom home is cozy incarnate.

The cozy, 323-square-foot cabin is a cozy retreat amidst the vast landscape it inhabits.

A worm filter system treats all of the home’s black water, producing fertilizer to regenerate the soil.

The landscape design, by Anna Boeschenstein of Grounded, followed a 2,200-square-foot extension by Formwork architects Robert and Cecilia H. Nichols. The front door is painted in Chinese Red by Sherwin-Williams.

“There’s something about it that feels very contextual to where it is—on a little teeny hill, looking out over the Dry Creek Valley, and there’s nothing else artful around,” says Louis.

The 1965 residence is built around a serene courtyard, deepening the property's intimate connection to nature.
