Dabito and his husband started out looking for a house to flip, but then “decided it would be way more special and fun to build our dream home from the ground up,” he says.

Now, tall storage cabinets surround a niche with Kappa tile from 41Zero42, this time in a brighter hue, combined with a plainsawn white oak frame and Rosso Verona marble counter.

The floors and casework are white oak, and the counters and backsplash are marble. The sconces are a custom design by Workaday, which is available through their Portland shop Daygoods.

The "appliance garage

The new main bath includes Material ash cabinetry, limestone counters, a Brizo Litze faucet, CB2 mirror and Clé cement tile.

The renovated kitchen features limestone countertops, vertically oriented white Bedrosians Makoto porcelain tile, with custom ash cabinetry, maple floors, and Muuto barstools.

Set in Highland Park, the 1920s Spanish-style home pairs smooth plastered walls with Saltillo, Talavera, and zellige finishes.

Not accounted for in the initial budget is the $78K Isaac spent on furnishings as well as art materials, tech equipment, and a piano: “I didn’t realize how much nice, quality things were going to cost,” says Isaac.

The studio uses Shou Sugi Ban cedar siding, white oak, and local Texas limestone. “In a sense it’s nicer than our home,” says Isaac, referring to the high-quality, natural finishes.

A blue checkered Moroccan rug amps up the visual interest in the space, along with a new yellow Togo couch and Herman Miller coffee table. Switching out the mullioned windows for new tilt-and-turn windows from Semko help the space feel larger and increase energy efficiency.

Studio Becker Xu streamlined the kitchen by building all of the appliances into the millwork. The budget-friendly countertops are a Formica solid surface.

Furniture built by Matthew, such as the wall-hung unit holding the stereo, is mixed with antiques, like the foyer table once belonging to Matthew’s great-grandfather, and the couple’s extensive art collection. “We have a lot of art by Seattle artists,” says Holly.

From the tabletop to the backsplash to the bar front, this home features beautiful texture and color on every surface.

“It was a pleasant surprise that the surfboard fin tile could rotate and create modern circle-like pattern when placed together,” Kate notes. “Our kids can be credited with the discovery.”
