Sitting lightly above the eelgrass, this tiny dwelling serves as a port of entry for a family getaway on the Salish Sea.

“One of the most critical changes we are seeing in residential living is the fact that costs are going up while our spaces are shrinking,” says architect Antonin Yuji Maeno. “We kept asking ourselves: How can we design a habitat that addresses our increasing need to do more in less space?”

The units are installed on a site in Hurley, New York, overlooking Twin Lakes, and some of them will include private hot tubs.

Filipe Almendary and Manuela Tossi called on Mapa Architects to create a weekend retreat on a grassy hillside near Joaquim Egídio.

The new bathroom has Cle tile and custom limestone sinks that Emily found in a chance search online. "Marblebasinhub.com. They have incredible, incredible sinks," she says.

The new volume extends into the backyard but increases the house’s footprint by only 225 square feet. It is slightly taller than the existing structure, minimizing overlap between roofs. The cladding is composed of marine-grade plywood panels, colored black with Benjamin Moore’s Arborcoat exterior stain, to create an affordable facsimile of cement fiberboard panels. The patio is paved in black decomposed granite.

Designed by Boston-based architect Sebastian Mariscal, this house, which celebrates the best of Californian indoor-outdoor living, was designed to frame views of the trees and the surrounding landscape.

Olive trees line the perimeter of the side yard, which also features space for seating and a swing set in the back corner.
