In the primary bedroom is a vintage burlwood bedside table by Milo Baughman.

The living room is complete with an Akari 120A pendant by Isamu Noguchi and a Vitsœ 606 Universal shelving system that holds a collection of design objects gifted and purchased.

Ashley’s husband, David, lounges with some good reading material near the entry.

The family room displays Ashley’s reference materials and heirlooms, including a porcelain vase made by her grandmother.

A splash of dark green paint in the sleeping nook introduces an old world drama to the space. The paint color is Billiard Green from Sherwin Williams. The crochet pendant is from World Market, and the brass bull was an eBay find. The couple's dog Waylon lounges in the pull-out dog bed drawer.

Whitewashed pine walls and an exposed pine ceiling help soften the space, while artworks and vintage finds give it life. The black and white drawing is by Adam himself, and the couple found the hanging tumbleweed in a fence somewhere between Marfa and El Paso.

Inside, the couple's vintage organ anchors the space. A new pink sofa from Interior Defined is one of the only new items purchased for the home; most are vintage or pieces the couple inherited. The rug is a vintage horse blanket the couple picked up at a flea market in Kansas, and the white chair is a piece they found in a friend's old building in Corsicana, Texas.

A custom diamond-shaped mirror from Zonda Taller de Muebles sits above audio equipment inherited from Poroto's grandmother.

Natural light pours in through the black-frame windows to keep the space feeling airy and bright.

The sofa, bookshelf, and coffee table are custom from Zonda Taller de Mubles; the complementary armchairs were flea market finds.

Before: The flow needed a vast improvement.

A 1919 Brooklyn Daily Eagle article praised “Calderville” for its trees and the “attractiveness” they bring: “By next spring it is expected that practically every house in the ‘ville’ will have a tree of its own.

“A lot of people assumed we were going to [remove the built-ins] but I thought it would be nice for a kid's room,” says Serena. “It’s enchanting. Our child is excited by the little nooks and crannies, and the texture of the room.”

In the year following the remodel, Serena and Andrew are taking a slow and considered approach to picking out their furnishings. “We're just trying to live in the space and think about what works,” says Serena. At the ceiling, the “Athena” surface mounted light found on Etsy.

The kitchen was expanded in the remodel, and outfitted in Ikea cabinets with Semihandmade fronts painted sage green and CB2 half moon pulls. The counters are Corian Snow Flurry, and the new patio door is aluminum clad wood from Jeld Wen. A panel ready Fisher Paykel refrigerator is to the right of the stove.
