Five House by M Gooden Design floor plan

Eighteen insulated concrete panels, each a different size and shape, were trucked to the site and hoisted into place over three days. The outlines of eight of these panels can be seen when the house is viewed from the southwest.

New Frontiers Design equipped the Orchid with a row of clerestory windows, several skylights, and a roll-up glass door (all from Pella) to make sure the daylighting was as on point as the LEDs. Where there isn’t glazing, maple-finished plywood panels line the walls. The hardwood floors are made from oak.

Friends and family hang out on the back patio. “It’s kind of a fugly house, but we don’t care,” Caleb says.

While the new facade is swathed in black stucco, it maintains elements of the original carriage house, which is hidden within the wall. Beyond the grounding stucco base, Healey designed two white volumes to be seen above, teasing the idea that more exists beyond the entry point.
