The previous galley-style kitchen was dark and closed off from the rest of the house. For the remodel, Sammie requested high ceilings, no upper cabinets, and U-shaped drawers. Simple white-painted upper shelves display a collection of ceramic dishes.

The materiality of the new staircase on the main level—glass and white oak—makes the area feel open and spacious. The skinny ceramic vase in the foreground is one of the few pieces that survived the fire.

There is still visible char on the tree next to the rebuilt deck (the old deck, which was in the same location, is where the fire started). "I've noticed the char gradually lessen over time," Sammie says. "Now all of the leaves and branches are nice and green."

Nestled in a forested spot in Oakland Hills, this house—victim to a tragic fire in 2017—was rebuilt as a bright, serene retreat. At first, the homeowner wasn't sure if she wanted to keep the ruined house or sell, but ultimately her love for the property won out and she stayed.

The team painted the exterior brick after patching it in places, like the section left by the removal of the door. “We could find the exact texture of brick, that classic Roman running bond, but we could not find it in the right color,” says architect Kailin Gregga. Painting the entire exterior unifies the façade. Rich Brilliant Willing “Hoist” sconces in Black was also added.

The staircase follows the bedroom’s new primary material, French white oak.

The home’s interior design was intentionally simple: access to light and views were a main priority. “The roof in this room slopes gradually up to the south, providing a light monitor that brings in southern light filtered through the trees, while providing a framed view of the tops of the trees beyond,” Hutchison says. Plank flooring by United Tile and Edge wall sconces by Belfer unite the living and dining spaces.

The Coles and their children love hitting the beach, just four blocks away.
