The ceramic tiles were created with irregular glaze, which mimics the reflections of the harbor nearby.

The couple added a half-bathroom to the main level and replaced the tiling, costing them around $6,600 combined.

For the study room, a friend who is also a carpenter crafted custom built-in bookshelves that matched perfectly with their new kitchen cabinets.

It was important for the creative pair to be able to showcase their collection of art pieces throughout.

The home has retained much of its historic character, including its original wood floors and doors.

Once dark and cloistered, this residence revamped by Jon Powell Architecture now revels in daylight, bright color, and garden views.

“I knew I was going to use it as an art studio so I didn't want anything precious,” says Amber. “It just feels like a great creative space to think and make art.”

Smaller square tile in matte white from Home Depot references what was there before, and the oak and quartz vanity echoes the kitchen cabinet treatment.

From the opposite angle, it becomes apparent how important it was to remove the support post and add in a new header to open up the views between rooms. “I think it changes everything,” says Amber. The large rugs were picked up on Amber’s travels, and she hasn’t had rooms big enough to display them until now.

Maple shelves were stained to match the cabinets, joined by white quartz on the counters.

Two-tone cabinets anchor the kitchen, including stained white oak on the bottom and white uppers.

One of Amber’s favorite features in in the house is the splash of color in the kitchen backsplash, via a tile called 'Unfading' green slate from Vermont Structural Slate Company.

Amber preserved the beams at the ceiling and incorporated new JWeld windows and door units.

The bathroom wall tile is from Lili, the wall light at the sink is from Alora Mood, the orange wall light is from West Elm, the sink vanity is from Joss and Main, the countertop is Silestone Quartz, the faucet is American Standard, and the tub was repurposed with a Delta fixture.

The clients have a large collection of indoor plants, and 4 S Architecture designed a scheme with plenty of spots to display plants, from the deep windowsills to the semi-recessed extractor above the island that features an integrated shelf. “We had originally specified a fully flush extractor system, but they are very expensive,” says architect, Julia Hamson. “We went for one that is semi-recessed, so was cost effective but still has less visual impact than a dropped extractor.”
