Sticotti and his eponymous studio produced the majority of the furnishings in the house—as well as architectural elements like the steel staircase with wooden treads. The kitchen opens to a garden where Sticotti keeps his woodworking tools.

On a steep, forested, nearly 30-degree slope adjacent to a ski run and lodge north of Lake Tahoe, Greg Faulkner, founder of Faulkner Architects, spent multiple years working on this contemporary family cabin. The roof "tilts up to the mountains and down to the valley like a visor, while the main home mirrors the ski run to the east side of the property, so the home has a central axis that runs up through it," he says. During the winter, one can ski directly into the living room, with its inset fireplace and 17-foot-high ceilings.

Christa envisioned the main bathroom on the upper level as a sanctuary with a soaking tub. “We opened up the ceiling to expose the volume to its full 14-foot height,” she explains. “We kept the same layout, but replaced the shallow alcove tub with a soaking tub and Vola faucets. We found a floating vanity with a matching medicine cabinet, and a wall-mount toilet.” The dimensional wall tile is Ann Sacks Context Pillow Mosaic, which comes alive as natural light streams in from clerestory windows.

"The transom was put in primarily to provide a curtain track," says Gerson. The transom also allows natural light to pass into the back of the apartment, and a fan increases airflow.

A new bank of storage in the hall runs between the preserved concrete columns. The new construction highlights the old, and giving it "observable prominence," says Gerson.
