Joan’s main request, aside from a single-level residence, was that she would feel like she was “outside in and inside out” at all times. A sliding glass wall system along the back of the house lets her and Ken open their dining room up to the surrounding forest.

At the north end of the living room, a sliding barn-style door opens to reveal the primary suite. Ken and Joan love to entertain, so a large, comfortable sectional was a must. Positioned in front of the custom fireplace, it’s a popular after-dinner gathering place when it’s too cool or rainy to venture outdoors.

For the living room, Dovetail’s metal shop fabricated a custom fireplace to go between the Quantum windows. The steel surround is coated in an antique black finish to complement the stained cedar wall.

During site excavation, a collection of large, glacial boulders was discovered. Ken, who is interested in geology wanted to keep them on property, so Signal Architecture worked as many as they could into the landscape. The slatted fir wall separates the home’s dining area from the guest wing.

High ceilings and framed views create a distinctive experience, which continues with Wander Cabins’ guided outdoor adventures, such as a hike down the slopes.

“There are a lot of cool and very beautiful cabins being designed, but they all look alike,” Pérez Rea Juncá says. “The generic wooden cabin—it’s always this natural-pine tone,” says Germenos Garcia. The O-Frame uses pine plywood for the walls and ceiling and uses treated pine planks for the floor, but it’s all stained in dark and earthy colors.
