Set on a 40-acre property nicknamed Camelot, the tree house is surrounded by pines, Blue spruce, Douglas fir, mushrooms, wildflowers, rare native shrubs, waterfalls, and a stream.

Robin Wall, the owner of the tree house, enjoys morning coffee, reading, picnics, and quiet time at the escape.

The exterior is clad in corrugated, galvanized metal. “We just spray it off with a water house,” says Mark.

The deck is constructed from standard, treated 2x6s from the hardware store. The oak tree in the center of the deck provides the family with shade and cooler temperatures through the humid summers, and protects from the rain as well.

Madison points out that the pod concept would make it easy to add an extension if necessary. “We see it as a house that can grow with us—and that we can pay for as we go along.”

The stilts are made from rust-resistant steel that can withstand the salt water, and they are inserted into small holes drilled into the rock. All other parts of the structure are timber. “It was the environmentally friendly choice,” says architect Line Solgaard.

One of the main sustainable features of the home is its small size. “It’s a very small house with good insulation and natural ventilation,” says architect Line Solgaard. “Keeping the building small is one of the most important considerations for sustainability.”

Sitting lightly above the eelgrass, this tiny dwelling serves as a port of entry for a family getaway on the Salish Sea.

Ryan Anderson of RAD Furniture designed the stools as well as the table and benches on the pool deck.

The wooden floor and pink Pandomo surfaces were selected for their scratch-proof qualities, and to give the “cats' room” a sense of warmth. The wall coating absorbs smells and helps regulate humidity levels.
