The owners retained an existing steel fireplace, which is beside a wall sculpture by the home's original owner, artist Alden Mason.

The home's entry stairway is bookended a by glass-ensconced guest room that doubles as a music room, and a home office.

Custom white oak shelving separates the media/guestroom from the kitchen.

In addition to a desk, there’s a tucked-in bed for reading or relaxing. “The idea behind the office was figuring out three tiers,” explains Rachel, “rest, casual, and full-on work mode.”

Framing the lightwell with a custom poplar wood screen painted white introduces a subtle modern texture throughout the home. The breakfast nook is anchored by a table from Nadeau and a set of wishbone chairs from Rove Concepts.

Relocating the ground floor landing helped concentrate the stairwell to a smaller footprint, and opened up more space in the downstairs rooms.

In the family room, a new set of French doors opens to a small terrace. An antique Indian coffee table is paired with chairs from Lulu and Georgia and 1st Dibs and a Charlotte Perriand wood side table.

White oak flooring throughout helps unify the home, with the original ceiling beams painted white. In the dining room, a table and chairs from Burke Decor are capped with a pair of pendant lights from Gubi Louis Weisdorf. An antique Indian bench sits against the wall.

The architects worked together with Divya to make interior furnishing selections. "My parents used to own a showroom here in Houston where they would import antique furniture from India,

Glass walls allow separation and permeability between the rooms upstairs.

A linear window with its sill dropped to the floor creates connection to the side yard. “We incorporated all these new windows in order to stream a lot more light into the house,” says Bassett.

Articulated reveals mark where the drywall meets the wood of the tread, and a bent steel railing, powder-coated black, follows the line of the staircase.

The stair, hovering just above the downstairs landing, is barefoot (and paw) friendly.

The shape of the Perch fits neatly within the the city’s setback tent. The structure’s Cor-Ten steel skin plays off the wood siding of the existing bungalow.
