The previous owners used the residence as a vacation home. The husband was an avid painter and photographer who used the garage as a dark room, which meant there was already plumbing installed when Brian decided to convert the space into a casita.

The couple now visits their wooded retreat almost every week—whether working remotely or relaxing on the weekends. “The purpose of the home is to relax,” says Barber. “For our family, [it] was about creating an escape from the rhythms and patterns of everyday life—somewhere where we focus on the activities we actually want to spend time on.”

The new addition is accessed through a set of doors that connect to the original house. "As our kids get older, we want them and their friends to feel comfortable hanging out here," says homeowner Milvi Tiislar.  "Sometimes, when we have other families over, the adults will all retreat to this space, let the kids have the house, and close the doors!"
