LA-based real estate development company Prime Five Homes sought to create a home that was clean, peaceful, and uncluttered, particularly through material choices and large, open spaces. The central atrium—a recurring element used to expand indoor/outdoor space in Prime Five Homes projects—helps lengthen the living room vertically and creates a light well that fills both the upstairs and downstairs areas with bright daylight.

A breakfast nook off the kitchen is designed as a solarium and looks out onto the lush backyard. The glass ceiling and wall of windows allow sunshine to warm the space, which also features an exposed brick wall and built-in china cabinets on both sides.

The kitchen looks into the living/dining area. The pressed metal backsplash was incorporated because it has sentimental meaning for the clients. The material is also economical and quick and easy to install.

The living room, dining room, and kitchen are distinct spaces while still being very open. “It was fun to come up with a slightly different approach to an open living concept,” Herrmann says. Major interior moves include restoring the tinted concrete flooring throughout, as well as the abundance of Philippine mahogany in the ceiling, walls, and cabinetry. The team also built custom furnishings designed by Wright, such as the dining room table, here surrounded by Nakashima chairs.
