Architect Paul Elliott erected a new, cork- and timber-clad house on the adjoining plot to his family home, which his late architect father designed and built in Cape Town, South Africa. The new residence implements sustainable materials such as cork and timber. It also incorporates Japanese architectural styles, including circular windows and doorways.

“The dining room wallpaper [Cole & Son’s Forest] helped bring the outdoors in, which was a parallel play on the large windows selected by the architects. Selecting wallpapers that had a forced perspective also provided a sense of depth for spaces like the dining room and powder room,” says Santos.

Naturally, the Copes are hands-on with all of the interior touches throughout their home (at one point, they even had a bed frame fashioned from shipping pallets). In the living room, they’ve styled an architectural fragment, sourced from local salvage yard Big Reuse (formerly Build It Green), and re-painted it white to create a striking plant display.

The dining room is for the kids with funky blue and red chairs, gold Ellie Kishimoto wallpaper that is reminiscent of the ornate wallpaper that may existed in this home in the 19th century, and a large table. The fireplace, which is original, was recovered in marble.

“Wallpaper came into the picture, which was totally fun,” Ron says. The new powder room is gussied up with CW Stockwell Martinique wallpaper, a Scarabeo Ceramiche Teorema wash basin, and light fixtures and a mirror from West Elm.
