The brick flooring was handmade in Tijuana, Mexico.

The couple noticed the evolving trend of open kitchens in restaurants, and drew inspiration when designing their own: “Kitchen restaurants used to be enclosed in the back. Now in restaurants the kitchen is almost like a DJ booth where the chef is in the middle of it and it's a glass you can look into, Carlos says. “We wanted to open up the kitchen so that you could see into the house when you were cooking. There was a big armoire that divided the dining room from the kitchen. We opened all that up and then positioned that kitchen island so that you're facing out when you’re cooking. We wanted it to feel very open with a nice flow. We sit at the island all the time to have breakfast and dinner.”

“After our first Zoom meeting, Tommy came back with renderings that blew us away,” Keith says. “He got what we were trying to do.”

In the living room, soft-hued seating arranged in a circle is perfect for entertaining. On the far wall, Sunrise Over the Hudson, by Erik Koeppel, competes with the stunning scenery outside. “Charlie was interested in skewered views, like looking straight up at the sky and then out to the woods,” says Rick.

Working with his father, Anton designed and built a custom loft for the boys in the upstairs addition.

Lee Buchanan of Lee Build created a screen of white ash slats beside the kitchen as well as the entry. "The stairs are beautifully integrated into the kitchen so the kids and I are always talking and someone is always sitting on the bottom steps,

Their bathroom has floor-to-ceiling sage tiles in the shower, coordinating with the green shade used in the kitchen.

The polished concrete floor of the kitchen continues onto the patio for cohesion. The color of the cabinetry was also chosen to link this common space to the outdoors.

The stairs are one of the best parts of the renovation and were assembled on-site, stretching from basement to the top floor.

The powder bathroom features a custom stone sink and white oak vanity base built by the homeowner.

The new maple table was made by Brit and Derek, and the fiber art is by Brit.

They added a primary suite with a balcony on the second floor. “On a beautiful day, you can see the ocean,” Robert says.

“The renovated home provides a much more open family space, oriented around the pool and kitchen,” say the architects. “We felt the project was very successful in achieving visual connectivity between spaces—both in plan and in section.”

Now, the bathroom flows cohesively with the rest of the home, thanks to simple white tile and a custom wood vanity.

The main entry flows into the living room, which now accesses the outdoor terrace via the door to the left.
