The curving white wall in architect Jay Atherton’s bedroom is optimally sited to capture shadows from the redbud tree outside his window. The bed rests on a concrete floor. "It was important that the rooms be pure spaces," says Cy Keener, a carpenter, who helped design and construct the spartan home in Phoenix.

Before: Architects Olivier Lekien and Mathilde Nicoulaud purchased a small cottage in the Parisian suburb of Montreil and set about renovating it with a budget of €65K.

Julie had the front door custom-made of wood and set on a pivot, so that it would be a textural focal point on either side of its opening.

Lin specified the String shelving across the walnut panel wall and had it surround a restored Paul McCobb credenza that the couple found at a garage sale twenty years ago. “Almost everything in our apartment has a story,” says Kitty.

“The things we splurged on still look raw, which is what we wanted,” adds Nick.

The living room hosts a slanted exposed beam ceiling and a massive stone fireplace evoking a cozy and agreeable atmosphere.

“While the Carey Holiday Homes didn’t originally feature wood paneling as a design element, a past owner of this home saw fit to add wood paneling to the living room, dining room, and primary bedroom,” Kinney says.

The ceiling drops down significantly over the built-in bench in the living area to create a cozy nook. “Like the kitchen, it’s a space within a space,” Thomas says. The wooden boards are flush with the window frame, allowing the sun to wash down the wall.

The home is clad in slats of sustainably sourced and locally grown untreated Lawson cypress.

Located in New Zealand, this compact prefab vacation home in the seaside community of Onemana Beach was a collaboration with architecture students from Auckland’s Unitec Institute of Technology.

In the snug rear lounge, the banquettes are fitted with upholstery made by local artisans.
