The family of five spend all of their winter and spring breaks at the cabin, enjoying activities like hiking and snow tubing. Though the year-long renovation cost triple their budget, the family is happy with finished results.

The kitchen is a balance of woods and stone, with marble on the large island and Naica quartzite in a leathered finish on the perimeter counters and backsplash. The stove hood is a custom plaster finish: “I was constantly looking for ways to add softness,” says interior designer Holly Waterfield.

Oza Sabbeth Architects and the Brooklyn Home Company teamed up to create this 2,800-square-foot home in the Ditch Plains hamlet of Montauk, in Long Island, New York.

The chairs at the kitchen table were rescued from an old church.

To avoid excavating the land, Pang and Boyle designed a structural platform to keep the cabin level.

One big budget-saver was eliminating the drywall and embracing the raw plywood finish (plus a light stain).

"When you’re outside the dark exterior recedes into the richness of the flora,

“We decided it was a fun moment to have no white in the space and use the fireplace as a kind of accent,” says Paula.

For the interior, “We worked hard to basically keep the tones the same, even if the wood may have changed, from a hardwood to a soft wood,” says Sabbeth. Interestingly, the couple first wanted to whitewash the wood, but that treatment was eventually deemed too cold for the year-round coziness everyone was after.

The daylit kitchen/dining space nourishes an array of plants. Audi and Ivy used solid white oak to craft a prototype of their firm’s Zygo sideboard, which holds their place mats and orchid supplies. The Amagansett kitchen island is by Siosi, and the farm sink is vintage.
