A collage of brightly colored, geometric volumes comprise the Ettore Sottsass–designed residence of Lesley Bailey and Adrian Olabuenaga, proprietors of jewelry and accessories company ACME Studio. Completed in 1997, this home is one of few private commissions designed by the Italian architect, who passed away in 2007.
Located in historic Casa Blanca, Arizona, the Kempe Residence is focused on entertaining children, adults and pets alike. Salvaged olive trees were chosen to create a continuous arch of shade around the entire outdoor patio space, while smaller fruit bearing trees were used in pots and in locations where space was tight.
The apartment building dates to 1888, and the various residences feature high ceilings, mirrored doors, massive skirtings, and richly ornamented white stucco. “When it was built, there was no central heating, so each and every room had tiled, wood-burning stoves,” says resident Martin Ringqvist.
