One of Amber’s favorite features in in the house is the splash of color in the kitchen backsplash, via a tile called 'Unfading' green slate from Vermont Structural Slate Company.

The double-height wall of windows in the living room looks out on the property and was a big draw on their first walk-through.

The home is oriented to the south to take advantage of the light.

The outdoor space includes a fire pit.

Ample glazing frames views of the surrounding landscape, further connecting the living spaces to nature.

White penny tile and subway tile give the primary bath a crisp, clean feel.

The design team specified durable, easy-to-maintain, nontoxic, recyclable, natural, and regenerative materials. The kitchen island is engineered quartz and the cabinets are from a local cabinetmaker.

Quartersawn oak built-ins throughout the house were fabricated by Toronto cabinetmaker Built Work Design.

“Many of our customers watch remodel shows on television for inspiration and are under the impression that an entire kitchen can be remodeled in a few days,” explains Carter. “We explain it can typically take up to 12 weeks for a complete remodel and two to six weeks for a ‘swap the top,’ new paint, and appliances.”

Near the hallway is a sculpture by Zaric. The picture window toward the end of the space can be covered by a sliding screen for privacy and to diffuse light.

The workshop interiors emphasize function, with polished concrete slab floors and 35-foot-high ceilings to accommodate large projects and gatherings. The disco ball, set to spin via a smartphone app, can be lowered with an industrial winch and is visible from the overhead studio suite through a peek-a-boo window.
