Pam and Frank recently tasked Light and Air Architecture with remodeling this loft in New York City to get better natural light. “That’s exactly what we were looking for, is light and air,” says Frank.

The ceramic floor tiles are from Ciot, while the ceramic wall tiles are from Céragrès.

White oak storage wraps the kitchen, which is tucked under the lower ceiling, to create a more cozy spot that’s still connected to the living areas. “It's such a large space,” Erling says of the great room. “It's nice to be more intimate in the kitchen zone.” The counters are Gascogne blue limestone.

The birch was custom kerfed to look like planks and finished in a white varnish. The table and peninsula were also made to fit snugly into the A-frame.

Paths of Andalusian tile and intervening plaster walls help to delineate space in the expansive apartment, which is centered around an internal entry courtyard. The armchair, designed by Peter and Alison Smithson, is covered in a Josef Frank textile from Just Scandinavian. The white piece just behind it is a repurposed Austrian stove that’s now used as a storage device.

The bright orange tone of the front door matches the color of the accent wall in the living room, connecting the exterior and the interior of the ADU.

The maroon-tiled, walk-in shower has two showerheads and is well lit by a skylight from above.

Classic Ceramics wall tiles are combined with Caroma Cube ceramic basins in the bathrooms.

Studio Entry Court

The kitchen is one of Claude's favorite parts of the home. The team purchased stock cabinets that were professionally painted by a local Amish man and added wooden floors to match the rest of the house.

Kitchen appliances include a SMEG refrigerator, Bertazzoni Range Oven, and Bosch Dishwasher. The counters are honed white quartz, and the pendant over the island is the Cirrus Float by Edge Lighting.

The kitchen countertops are black quartz, offering a strong visual contrast to the plywood. “Leïla and Xavier enjoy having friends over to sit at the kitchen island, which is the center of the space,” says architect Catherine Milanese.

The floors are polished concrete. The architects incorporated locally sourced materials—from the tile to the marble countertops.

Hard materials such as polished concrete were used for the interior floors and bench-tops. The interior brick walls were all painted white.

The team also custom-designed a vanity.
