Built-in bunks are decked out with a private window for viewing the outdoors, and an adjustable reading light from Prima Lighting. A simple pendant hangs above the main space.

The bottom step of the staircase that leads to the bedroom features a drawer for a kitty litter box. The Macdonalds' cat accesses the litter box from inside the bathroom on the other side of the wall.

The walls and the ceilings of the cabins are dressed with poplar plywood and the flooring is made from locally sourced ash.

The angle of the custom range hood creates, in negative space, the same trapezoidal shape as the exterior. Cabinets are IKEA with custom-painted fronts.

The bathroom has been tucked out of sight, using both a partition wall and bathroom door to provide extra privacy while using the toilet or shower.

The kitchenette features a cooktop, sink, refrigerator, and plenty of storage options—and all of this fits within the unit when it is folded up, making it simple to unfold and set-up on site.

Thermo-treated pine shower walls display a subtle pattern that adds interest in the bathroom.

The pellet stove in the living area was a key element of the original brief, and the arrangement of the furniture in this space is a response to its placement. The interior lounge extends directly to an outside deck with a comfortable seating arrangement.

“Material quality and durability were key from the very beginning,” says architect Binke Lenhardt. “So, we found ourselves looking into a material library that was rather unconventional, almost in an engineering way.” The rubber flooring is from Noraplan and the adaptable furniture elements are made from two types of plywood—lightweight poplar plywood and a stronger multiplex birch—both coated with high-pressure laminate.

A wood-burning stove in the corner of the tree house offers warmth for the interior.

The tree house's salvaged French-style windows were purchased on Facebook Marketplace for $200.
